What you need to know before you begin

A shade sail is a tensioned fabric membrane stretched tight between three or more solid fixing points. Understand these four fundamentals and every step that follows will become a lot easier for you.

Real UV protection

Our HDPE shade fabrics block up to 98% of UV. Shade sails are about sun protection first — they're designed to be a breathable shade, not a waterproof roof.

It's all about tension

A sail must be pulled tight between strong anchor points. Solid fixings and correct tension are what prevent sagging, flapping and premature wear.

Made to your measurements

A custom sail is cut to your exact site. That's why you install your fixing points first, then measure between them — never measure a empty space with no fixings installed.

Shape, size & colour

Triangles, squares, rectangles and more, in 73 colours. Overlap several sails to cover larger areas and vary the heights for better run-off and a sharper look.

A shade sail is a panel of strong, UV-stabilised fabric tensioned between three or more fixing points. The tension gives it strength, shape, and a clean architectural appearance.

No. Our Shade Sails are made from breathable HDPE shade fabric, designed for UV protection and airflow—not rain protection. They can handle light showers, but for genuine waterproof cover you'll need a different solution. See our fabrics range.

No. We specialise in breathable HDPE Shade Sails (sometimes called sun sails). If you specifically need waterproofing, a Shade Spade sail isn't the right product for you. Still not sure? Ask our team

Our fabrics provide up to 98% UV protection, depending on the range selected. Remember the shaded patch moves as the sun moves, so correct positioning is just as important as the fabric itself. Read our coverage & positioning guide.

A quality Shade Sail can last for many years. Our fabrics carry a 10–15 year warranty depending on the range, and every sail is stitched with SolarFix® PTFE thread ensuring the stitching lasts as long as the fabric itself. Learn why we use PTFE thread.

We're an online custom manufacturer, so we don't measure or install on-site — your sail is made to your measurements and shipped to you to fit. Our step-by-step measure and install guides are designed to make DIY straightforward, and for a hands-off finish you can always hire a local handyman or installer.

Most are a straightforward weekend DIY job for two people once the fixing points are in. You attach the corners, then tension evenly with the turnbuckles. Our installation guide walks you through the full process step by step

Yes, when it's designed and built for the conditions — the right fabric, strong posts and footings, and correct tension. In exposed or coastal spots, favour smaller sails and heavier fabric like Monotec 370, and take large sails down before severe storms. We cover this in planning.

In most locations, yes. Many people leave sails up year-round and simply re-tension annually; others take them down over winter or before storm season to extend their life. Find more care tips on the maintain page.
