The four planning decisions
Before you measure or install anything, plan these four key elements of your Shade Sail. Spending a few minutes planning the design now will help avoid costly changes later.
Shape & number of corners
Decide on the shape that best suits your space. Large or irregular areas are sometimes best covered with multiple overlapping sails.
Position for the sun
Track where the sun sits during the times you use the space most. Plan your sail's position and layout to maximise shade throughout those hours.
Vary the heights
Never mount every corner at the same height. Varying mounting point heights will improve both your sail tension and aesthetics. Opposing high and low corners create the signature twisted (hypar) shape.
Fabric & colour
Compare shade percentages, colours, and fabric ranges to find the best balance of UV protection, appearance, and comfort for your space.

Avoid these and you'll be well on your way to a successful project.
- Planning every fixing point at the same height. Height variation helps create proper tension and the signature twisted (hypar) shape.
- Planning for midday shade only. The sun moves throughout the day, so plan for when you'll actually use the space.
- Trying to cover too much with one sail. Multiple sails often provide better coverage and better performance.
- Ignoring wind. In exposed or coastal sites, plan for smaller sails, stronger posts and a heavier fabric like Monotec 370.
- Ignoring surrounding obstacles. Consider gutters, trees, roofs, and nearby structures when planning your layout.
Planning Best Practices
- Sketch your layout first. A simple drawing makes it easier to visualise your sail and fixing points.
- Think about how you'll use the space. Position your Shade Sail to provide shade where it's needed most throughout the day.
- Plan to allow enough clearance. Leave space so a tensioned sail won't rub against roofs, gutters, or trees.
- Keep your layout practical. Choose fixing point locations that are both achievable and structurally suitable.
Planning & design questions
How to lay out a sail that performs and looks the part.
Choose a shape that suits your space and fixing points. Triangles are the simplest, while squares and rectangles cover more usable area. Large or irregular spaces

Varying fixing point heights improves tension, creates the signature twisted (hypar) shape, and helps water drain away. Visually, it gives that sculpted look instead of a flat, saggy tarp. Read more in why varying heights matters.

Very large - we manufacture big custom sails. But bigger isn't always better as larger sails create higher loads so often the smarter move for a large area is too install multiple overlapping sails. Not sure? Send your dimensions via contact us and we'll offer design advice.
Darker fabrics generally block more UV, casting deeper shade, and they can feel a touch warmer above the sail - while lighter colours help create a brighter space. All of our HDPE fabrics are UV-stabilised for long

Yes, and it's a popular use - positioning is important to maximise shade and avoid interference with surrounding structures. Our stainless 316 fittings are the right choice around pools and coastal air. See layout ideas in our positioning guide.
There's no single number — span depends on sail size, fabric and wind zone, all of which set your post and footing sizes. Design the layout first, then size any posts and footings to suit the loads. If you're unsure, seek advice from a qualified engineer.
Allow comfortable headroom while leaving clearance from roofs, gutters, trees, and doors. Remember that the lowest point of the sail will be at the lowest mounting point/s. Heights are captured at step #5 - measure.
Yes — a wall or fascia can be used as an anchor as long as the structure is suitable for the loads created by a tensioned Shade Sail. Use appropriate wall plates and fixings designed for the supporting structure. For further information visit the mounting points page.
Always angled. A deliberate slope (created by height difference between corners) will improve tension, create the signature hypar shape, and encourages water runoff.
Absolutely. If your already have fixing points installed from a previous Shade Sail, skip straight to step 5 to take your measurements and then order a custom Shade Sail to get an exact fit for your existing layout.
Council requirements vary depending on your location and type of installation. We recommend checking with your local authority before beginning your Shade Sail project. Our USA wind load & code resource is a useful starting point.
