Instructions for Attaching and Tensioning a Shade Sail

Once you have your poles and other mount points securely installed, attaching and tensioning your shade sail is the next crucial step. Proper attachment and tensioning ensure that the sail performs optimally, providing maximum shade and stability. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Materials Needed

• Shade sail
• D-shackles or snap hooks
• Turnbuckles or other tensioning devices
• Ladder
• Wrench or spanner

Step-by-Step Instructions  

1. Lay Out the Shade Sail

• Unpack and Inspect: Unpack the shade sail and inspect it for any damage or defects.
• Position on Ground: Lay the shade sail out on the ground beneath the installed mount points. Ensure that it is oriented correctly according to the design and desired coverage. Make sure that the label on the sail aligns with the correct mount point as indicated on your layout drawing.

2. Attach Turnbuckles and D Shackles to the Sail.

• Choose Attachments: Select the appropriate attachments (D-shackles or snap hooks) for securing the corners of the sail to the mount points.
• Attach Turnbuckles: Secure the turnbuckles to each corner as required using D-shackles or snap hooks. Make sure they are positioned correctly to allow for tightening and adjusted to their maximum length
• Grease The Stainless fittings. It is recommended to apply some grease to all threads and moving parts of the stainless-steel fittings to make sure that they don’t bind up over time. Our standard hardware kit includes this, or you can purchase this on our site or from a local automotive or engineering supplies store.

3. Attach the Corners to Mount Points

• Connect Corners: Starting with one corner, attach the shade sail to the first mount point. Move to the opposite corner to ensure even distribution of the sail. The first corners should be able to be attached without the aid of a ratchet. You may need to attach the last corner with mechanical help to get a nicely tensioned sail.
• Fixing With Shackles: If using shackles, make sure to install these with the pins going in from the top as shown in the photo. This means that if the pin ever unwinds, or become loose it is less likely to fall out of the shackle and get lost.
• Repeat for All Corners:  Attach one end of the turnbuckle to a corner dee of the sail. At this point you will need to use a strong piece of braided cord or rope to attach the rest of these points to the fixing eyes. 
  
• Loop the cord/rope around the dee ring on the Shade Sail, then through the
  fixing eye. You can then tension the rope by hand or use a tensioning device (load
  ratchet, winch etc). This will allow you to pull the sail close enough to connect the
  turnbuckle to the eye Ensure each attachment is secure but not yet fully tensioned. 
  
• Once the corner has been connected, put the pin in and secure it with the safety
  ring. The temporary rope can now be released and removed.

4. Gradually Tension the Shade Sail

• Initial Tensioning: Begin tightening the turnbuckles evenly across all corners. Tighten each turnbuckle a few turns at a time to ensure even tensioning.
• Check Alignment: As you tighten, periodically check the alignment and positioning of the shade sail. Make sure it remains centered and properly oriented.

5. Achieve Proper Tension

• Final Adjustments: Continue tightening the turnbuckles until the shade sail is taut and free from significant wrinkles or sagging.
• Ensure Stability: The sail should be tight enough to resist flapping in the wind but not so tight that it over-stresses the fabric or mounting points.

6. Secure and Inspect

• Lock Turnbuckles: Once the desired tension is achieved, lock the turnbuckles in place. Some turnbuckles have locking nuts or clips to secure them.
• Safety Inspection: Perform a final inspection to ensure all connections are secure. Check that all hardware is tight, and the sail is evenly tensioned.

7. Regular Maintenance

• Periodic Checks: Regularly check the tension of the shade sail and the condition of the hardware. Adjust the tension as needed to maintain optimal performance.
• Cleaning: Keep the sail clean by hosing it down regularly. Remove any debris that could affect its performance.
